New Isolation

Joe Borreson Matt Rösner is new to me, and this album seems a beautiful departure from his older works, I have heard, but the newer experimentation heavy on coastal and waterway field recordings with sparsely played piano and gently bowed notes from an unidentifiable source, and sometimes treated instruments. It all feels very 'oceanic' or lost at sea or along a river path and I am glad to walk along with him as the shadows step aside and the sounds tell a story. Favorite track: No.24 Part 1.

about

After an almost 8 year hiatus as a solo artist, Matt Rösner returns with New Isolation, a collection of 5 pieces recorded at various locations along the shores of the Indian Ocean between 2012 and 2019.

The mini album begins with The South, recorded at the Harding Rivermouth, Denmark and the nearby Porongurup Ranges. The middle three pieces, No.24 Part 1-3, emerged from a solo piano improvisation processed through custom Max/Msp patches. The final track, The North, was recorded at Ningaloo Reef, a World Heritage area in Western Australia's remote North West.

Artist Statement

"In late 2012, I started working on a new solo record. I must have started and stopped numerous times and nothing was ever finished. For a long while composition made no sense so just I walked away, frustrated, placing my studio gear in storage. There was no plan to return to work."

"It was only when spending more time on the coast around my home that sound started to make sense again. The solitude and silence and the time to the think had served me well with New Isolation taking shape over a 2 week period in October 2019"
